Variation of actors preforming the scene with the skull of Yorik. | David Tennant preforming Hamlet's soliloquiy. |
Hamlet is obviously the most important character of the play...so what is his most important line? "To be or not to be" is the answer. This is the most famous quote from literature of all time. Most people think his soliloquy that contains this line think it's about his existence which is one way of looking at it since he is very depressed at the moment and is probably contemplating suicide, but he is also asking himself "to act, or not to act". In this way he's also encompassing the whole killing Claudius thing, and whether he should act against him or not. He is really contemplating life in general - the point of it all when there is so much suffering, how easy it is to just "sleep", as he puts it. Hamlet was simply thinking about the meaning of life and death in regards to himself and Claudius. |
